Cuboid syndrome is an injury that happens along the outside of the foot. An important bone there, the cuboid bone, acts as a pulley for a tendon (peroneus longus) as it wraps around the bone. The tendon comes down the outside of the ankle, so changes direction at the cuboid bone. When the peroneus longus muscle on the outside of the leg contracts, it is going to want to try and move the cuboid rather than use it as a pulley. The joints in the area are built to be very stable so the bone does not move. However, if they are not stable there is a tendency for the cuboid to sublux resulting in the condition of cuboid syndrome. It is usually starts off as an ache on the outside of the foot, but gets progressively more painful. The usual treatment for cuboid syndrome is cuboid manipulation to try and reduce the subluxed cuboid. The low dye strapping technique is also useful and so are foot orthotics in the longer term to manage cuboid syndrome.
